For generations, families in Plumas County have relied on local care to welcome their children into the world. But when Plumas District Hospital’s obstetrics unit was forced to close in 2022, expectant mothers were left to travel more than 80 miles to deliver their babies. The risks were immediate and profound. Yet, from this crisis grew a vision: the Plumas Model, an innovative solution that blends an Alternative Birthing Center with a Standby Perinatal Unit inside the hospital. This approach will restore safe, local maternity care and honor the community’s strong preference for midwifery-led, family-centered birth.
Today, that vision is within reach. With bipartisan support, Senate Bill 669 is in its final stages of approval. Once signed into law, Plumas District Hospital will be ready to activate this new service immediately. Your support will bring this vision to life—by helping restore the building where the birthing center will be housed, equipping the center with the tools and technology it needs, and providing our staff with the resources to deliver safe, compassionate care. Most importantly, your generosity ensures that families in Plumas County can welcome new life at home, supported by their community.
